The Franz Josef Glacier is a huge river of ice.

It sits in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on New Zealand's South Island. This glacier is quite special because it is a temperate maritime glacier. Most glaciers in warmer areas melt away completely. However, this one stays because it is short and very steep. It flows from the Southern Alps down to near sea level.

The Waiho River flows out from the end of the glacier.

How does such a big ice river work? It starts at a high snowfield called a névé. This névé is over 2,000 meters above sea level. A lot of snow falls on this wide field. The snow becomes very thick and compacted. This heavy ice then flows down a steep, narrow valley. The glacier moves quite fast through this path. It can move 15 feet or more every single day. This movement helps the glacier stay alive even in warmer weather.

People have shared stories about this place for a long time. The Māori name for the glacier is Te Moeka o Tuawe. This means "the tears of Hine Hukatere." Legend says her tears froze to form the ice. European sailors first described the area in 1859. Later, a geologist named Julius von Haast named it after Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria in 1865. In 1998, the name was officially changed to include the Māori name.

Glaciers often go through a cycle of advance and retreat. This means they move forward or shrink back. The glacier moves forward if it gets more snowfall. It retreats if it gets more rain. Between 1983 and 1999, the glacier actually grew by 1,420 meters. But it has also shrunk quite a bit recently. Between 2008 and 2017, it shrank by 1.5 km.

Scientists think it may lose 38% of its mass by the year 2100.

Many people visit this beautiful place every year. In 2017, about 700,000 people came to see it. You can see the ice by taking a helicopter flight. Some people also hike up the high Alex Knob. This is a long and hard hike. To walk on the ice, you need special gear. You must wear crampons, which are metal spikes for your boots.

You also need an ice axe to stay safe.
