Mount Kilimanjaro is a huge, dormant volcano in Tanzania.

It is the highest mountain in all of Africa. It is also the highest free-standing mountain in the world. This means it rises very high above its flat base. It is the highest volcano in the Eastern Hemisphere too. The mountain is the fourth most prominent peak on Earth.

Many people visit this amazing place to see its beauty.

The mountain was formed by volcanic activity over 2 million years ago. It is part of the East African Rift. Kilimanjaro has three different volcanic cones. The first is Shira, which is the lowest and is extinct. The second is Mawenzi, which is also extinct. The third and largest is Kibo.

Kibo is dormant, so it is quiet now but could erupt again. Kibo's highest point is called Uhuru Peak. This peak sits on the rim of a large crater.

People have lived near the mountain for a long time. The Chagga Kingdoms lived on the eastern and southern slopes. Their rule ended in 1963 when Julius Nyerere took over. We do not know exactly where the name Kilimanjaro comes from. Some think it means "mountain of greatness." Others think it means "unclimbable."

In 1848, Johannes Rebmann was the first European to report the mountain. Later, in 1899, Hans Meyer reached the highest summit. He originally named the top Kaiser-Wilhelm-Spitze.

Kilimanjaro has many different environments on its slopes. You can find montane forests and cloud forests there.

Some plants, like the giant groundsel, grow only on this mountain. The mountain also has a large ice cap. This cap includes the Rebmann, Furtwängler, and Credner glaciers.

Sadly, this ice is shrinking very fast. Over 80% of the ice was lost during the 20th century. Experts think the ice might disappear by the mid-21st century.

Today, Kilimanjaro is a famous place for hikers and climbers. It is known as one of the Seven Summits. There are seven different established routes to reach Uhuru Peak.

Climbing can be a hard job because of the height. The mountain's prominence can cause altitude sickness for some people. Even so, people travel from far away to walk these paths. It remains one of the most special landmarks on our planet.
