It sits inside the Alaska Range in the state of Alaska. The mountain is the main feature of Denali National Park and Preserve. It is a very special place on Earth. Denali is the tallest mountain in the world from its base to its peak on land.

It rises a huge distance from the sloping plains below. This makes it one of the largest mountains located entirely above sea level. The summit reaches an elevation of 20,310 feet.

The mountain was built by powerful forces deep underground. It is made mostly of a pink rock called quartz monzonite. This rock was pushed up by tectonic pressure. This happens when the Pacific plate slides beneath the North American plate. This movement also causes many deep earthquakes in Alaska. The shape of the mountain is also linked to the Denali Fault. This fault is a long crack in the Earth's crust. As the crust moves, it pushes the land upward in a vertical way. This process helps the mountain grow very high over time.

Many different people have tried to reach the top. In 1903, James Wickersham made the first recorded attempt, but he did not succeed. In 1906, Frederick Cook claimed he climbed it, but no one can prove this is true. The first real, verified climb happened on June 7, 1913. Four men named Hudson Stuck, Harry Karstens, Walter Harper, and Robert Tatum reached the summit. They climbed up the South Summit to get there.

Later, in 1951, Bradford Washburn found the West Buttress route. This path is now the most popular way for people to climb the mountain.

The mountain has many different names in its history. For centuries, the Koyukon people have called it Denali. In their language, this name means "the tall one." Other groups nearby use names that mean "big mountain."

In 1896, a man named William Dickey called it Mount McKinley. He chose this name to support a man running for president. The federal government used the name Mount McKinley for a long time. In 2015, the name was officially changed back to Denali. However, in January 2025, the name was changed back to Mount McKinley again.

Denali is a land of ice and massive features. Five large glaciers flow down its steep slopes. These include the Peters, Muldrow, Traleika, and Ruth glaciers.

The Kahiltna Glacier is the longest one in the Alaska Range. The mountain also has two main summits. The South Summit is the highest point on the mountain. The North Summit is a bit lower and is rarely climbed. Because it is so high and far away, it is a very famous landmark for the whole world.
