Grand Teton is the second highest peak in the state of Wyoming. Only Gannett Peak is taller. The mountain is part of a group of peaks called the Cathedral Group. This group also includes Teewinot Mountain, Mount Owen, and Middle Teton.

Nature has shaped this mountain over a very long time. The mountain began to rise up about 9 million years ago. During a time called the Miocene, the land started to lift. Later, many periods of glaciation helped carve the peaks into their current shapes. Glaciation is when huge masses of ice move across the land. Today, the Teton Glacier sits right below the north face of the mountain. The mountain also feeds the Snake River drainage basin through several local creeks and glaciers.

People have many different names for this peak in their history. In 1870, an expedition called the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition recorded it as Mount Hayden. Later, the name "Grand Teton" became very popular. The name might come from the French word "téton," which means large breast or large teat. Some people thought it was named after the Teton Sioux tribe. However, that tribe lived about 200 miles away in the Dakotas.

The Grand Teton National Park was officially established by law in 1929.

Climbing the mountain is a very big job for many athletes. There is a famous debate about who first reached the top. Nathaniel P. Langford and James Stevenson claimed they climbed it in 1872. However, a group led by William O. Owen reached the summit in 1898. Because of this, the most famous path is called the Owen-Spalding route. It is named after Owen and his climbing partner, Franklin Spalding. Another popular path is the Upper Exum Ridge Route. This route is a classic for climbers around the world.

Many people use the mountain for more than just climbing. Some people enjoy skiing down its snowy slopes. Bill Briggs made the first ski descent in 1971. Others even try to run up and down the mountain. In 2024, Michelino Sunseri ran the mountain in 2 hours, 50 minutes, and 10 seconds. This was a new speed record. Whether people are climbing, skiing, or running, Grand Teton is a very special place.
