It sits in the Simien Mountains National Park. This park is in the Amhara Region. The mountain is in the North Gondar Zone. It reaches an elevation of 4,550 metres. This makes it a very tall peak in the Ethiopian Highlands. The name Ras Dashen comes from the Amharic name Ras Dejen. This name refers to a head or a general. It is a leader who fights in front of the Emperor.

Some say this mountain was once part of a huge volcano. It sits on the eastern rim of this old volcano. The northern half of the rim is cut by many ravines. These deep cuts are called ravines. They drain water into the Takkazzi River. Mount Biuat is another peak nearby. It is 4,437 metres tall. A valley with the Meshaha River sits between the two peaks.

The weather on the mountain changes very fast. Snow often falls during the night. The temperature can change a lot between day and night. During the hottest time of year, the snow melts quickly. It can melt in just a few hours. This happens because the temperature can rise above 5 degrees Celsius by midday. In winter, snow falls normally. This snow can stay for weeks or months.

People have visited this mountain for a long time. French officers named Ferret and Galinier climbed it in 1841. This was the first recorded ascent by a European. We do not have proof that locals climbed it before then. However, the climate at the top is relatively hospitable. There are also high-altitude pastoral settlements nearby. These are places where people live and herd animals. You can even see a small fort near the top. It stands at about 4,300 metres.

Ras Dashen is a very special part of the Earth. It is one of the four-thousanders of Africa. It is also one of the highest points in the country. The map shows where the mountain sits in the highlands.
