It sits in the Simien Mountains National Park. This park is in the Amhara Region. The mountain is 4,550 metres tall.

Some say the mountain was once a big volcano. It is on the edge of a huge rim. Deep cuts called ravines go down the sides. These cuts drain into the Takkazzi River. Another peak called Mount Biuat is nearby. A river valley sits between them.

Weather on the mountain can change fast. Snow often falls during the night. The sun can make it warm by midday. This heat melts the snow in a few hours. In winter, snow may stay for weeks.

People live in high places near the mountain. They are pastoralists, which means they herd animals. You can still see a small fort there. It stands at 4,300 metres high. Two French officers first climbed it in 1841.
