They sit in Northeast Africa. They cover parts of Ethiopia and Eritrea. Some people call this area the "Roof of Africa." This is because the mountains are very high. The highest peak is Ras Dashen. It is 4,550 meters tall.

A big crack in the earth splits the highlands. This is called the Great Rift Valley. It divides the mountains into two parts. The northwest part has the Semien Mountains. The southeast part has the Harar Massif. Many salt lakes sit in the rift.

The weather is cool and temperate. This is because the mountains are so high. Even though the area is near the equator, it is not hot. The mountains catch rain from the Indian Ocean. This rain makes the Blue Nile river flow.
