Habesha is a name for many groups of people.

These people live in the highlands of Ethiopia and Eritrea. The name is very old. Some say it comes from ancient Egypt. They used a similar word for people from a place called Punt.

Other experts see the name in old stone carvings. These carvings are from the Sabaean people.

For a long time, people thought the Habesha came from far away. They thought tribes moved across the Red Sea to live there. Now, many scholars think this is not quite right. They believe the culture grew in the Horn of Africa. Some groups may have traded or lived together. This mix helped make the culture.

Today, many people use the name to feel close. It can mean people who speak Semitic languages. It can also mean Orthodox Christians. Some people use it to include all Ethiopians and Eritreans. It is a way to show a shared identity.
