Highlands are lands with high elevation. This means they sit much higher than the ground around them. They can be big hills or low mountains.

You can find highlands all over the world. In Scotland, the Scottish Highlands are very well known. In Australia, many highlands are above 500 meters. These areas often get snow in the winter.

Some highlands are very special for nature. The Central Highlands of Sri Lanka have rain forests. These forests are high up in the mountains. Many plants and animals live only in these woods.

Other highlands are harder for people. The highlands in Iceland cover much of the land. Most of that land is not easy for humans to live in.

Even other planets have highlands. Mercury, Venus, Mars, and the Moon all have them. On these planets, highlands are very large areas. They have high peaks and deep valleys. They look much like the highlands on Earth.
