Uplands are high areas. They often include mountains or valleys. Rivers in the uplands move very fast. This happens because the land drops quickly. We call this a steep gradient. This fast water has a lot of power.

Upland rivers are cool and clear. They flow over rocks and big stones. These rivers have lots of oxygen in the water. Because of this, special fish live there. They must be strong swimmers. They also need cold water to live.

Lowlands are much lower. They are often very flat. Rivers in the lowlands move slowly. The water is often warm. It can look cloudy because of sediment. Sediment is small bits of dirt in the water.

Lowland rivers have beds of fine sand or mud. Many fish live here too. These fish can live in warm water. They can also live with less oxygen. Some plants and wood also grow in these slow waters.
