A canyon is a deep crack in the earth.

Most canyons form over a very long time. This happens through erosion. Erosion is when wind or water wears away rock.

Rivers are a main way canyons form. The water flows over rock layers. It carries bits of rock downstream. This wears down the ground. Canyons often form where soft rock meets hard rock. The soft rock wears away easily. The hard rock stays to make steep cliffs.

Water can also break rocks in a way called frost wedging. Water seeps into cracks. Then the water freezes into ice. The ice pushes the rocks apart. Large chunks break off the walls.

There are many kinds of canyons. Slot canyons are very narrow with smooth walls.

A box canyon has steep walls on three sides. Some canyons are under the sea. These are called submarine canyons. They are made by landslides. Other canyons are hidden under ice sheets. The Capertee Valley in Australia is the widest canyon. It is 1 km wider than the Grand Canyon.
