Most valleys are V-shaped. This happens when rivers carve the land. But glaciers make a different shape.

Glaciers are huge sheets of ice. They move slowly down a slope. As the ice moves, it scrapes the ground. This is called scouring. The ice carves the land into a wide shape. It makes the sides steep and the bottom flat. This looks like the letter U. This process takes a very long time. It can take 10,000 to 100,000 years!

When the ice melts, many things are left behind. Small rocks called glacial till stay on the floor. Sometimes the valley floor has deep holes. These holes fill with water to make lakes. These are often called fjord-lakes. If the valley fills with saltwater, it is called a fjord. You can find these valleys in many places. They are in the Alps and the Himalayas. They are also in the Rocky Mountains.
