It has very steep sides or cliffs. You can find them in many cold places. They are near the Arctic and Antarctica.

How do they form? Long ago, huge rivers of ice called glaciers moved through land. These glaciers carved deep, U-shaped valleys.

When the ice melted, the ocean water moved in. This filled the deep valleys with salt water.

Many fjords have amazing features. Some have high waterfalls that drop from cliffs. We call these hanging valleys.

In some places, the water is very deep. The Sognefjord in Norway is one such place. It reaches far below sea level.

Life lives in these waters too. Scientists found coral reefs on the deep floors of Norwegian fjords. These reefs host many lifeforms like fish, sharks, and anemones.

In some areas, rocky islands called skerries sit near the coast. These rocks can make traveling by boat tricky.
