The land around a bay helps block wind and waves. This makes the water calmer than the open ocean.

Bays come in many shapes and sizes. A small, round bay is called a cove. A very large bay is often called a gulf.

Some bays are long and thin. These are called fjords. They are made by glaciers, which are huge sheets of ice.

Bays form in different ways. Some form when the earth's plates move. Others form when rivers or ice wear away the land. This wearing away is called erosion.

Bays are very helpful to people. They provide many fish to catch. They also offer safe spots for ships to rest. This makes them great places for ports. Ports are where ships land to trade goods.
