A fjord is a long and narrow part of the sea.

These inlets have very steep sides or high cliffs. They are found in many cold places on Earth. You can see them near the Arctic and Antarctica.

Norway is a famous place for them. It has nearly 1,200 fjords along its coast. This makes the coastline look very long and complex.

Fjords form through a slow and powerful way.

A huge river of ice called a glacier moves through a valley. The ice scrapes and cuts the bedrock into a U-shape.

This process is called abrasion. When the glacier melts, the ocean moves into the deep valley. This turns the valley into a fjord. Sometimes the land even rises up after the ice is gone. This is called glacial rebound.

People have studied these places for a long time. In the 1800s, a man named Jens Esmark shared a big idea. He said glaciers created these fjords. He believed thick ice once covered much of Northern Europe.

Other scientists had different ideas at first. One man named John Walter Gregory thought they were made by moving earth. Later research showed that glaciers were the real builders. The deep valleys and rocky thresholds prove the ice was there.

Fjords have many special features.

Some have hanging valleys that sit high above the main water. These often create beautiful waterfalls. Many fjords are much deeper than the ocean nearby. The Sognefjord in Norway is a great example.

It reaches very deep below sea level. Some fjords also have a sill at their mouth. This is a shallow area of rock. It can cause very strong and fast water currents.

Life thrives in these deep, dark waters.

Scientists found coral reefs on the bottom of Norwegian fjords in 2000. These reefs host sharks, fish, and anemones. They help make the coast a great place for fishing.

In some areas, you might see skerries. These are small, rocky islands near the coast. They often form where the ice carved many channels. They can make sailing through the water quite tricky.
