Peninsula

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A peninsula is a special kind of landform. It is a piece of land that sticks out into the water. It stays connected to the main land on only one side. Most of the sides are surrounded by water. This water can be a large ocean or a sea. It can even be a river. Some peninsulas sit between two different rivers.

You can find these landforms on every continent in the world. The largest one is the Arabian Peninsula in Asia.

Many different things can create a peninsula. Volcanoes can make them when they erupt near shallow water. Melting ice also plays a big part. Glaciers can carve out soft rock to leave land behind. Melting ice can also leave behind piles of dirt called sediment. These piles can act like dams for meltwater. This creates water that surrounds a piece of land.

Rivers can also build them. When a river carries dirt into the ocean, it leaves it there. This forms a delta peninsula.

Nature is always changing the shape of these places. The level of the sea can go up or down. This is called a marine transgression. If the water rises high, a peninsula might become an island. Wet weather can make a peninsula look much smaller. Dry weather can make it look much larger. Global warming can cause sea levels to rise. This might permanently change the size of some peninsulas over time.

Peninsulas have been very useful to people for a long time. Early humans and Neanderthals used them as shelters. They were great places for hunting. People could find animals from the land and the sea in one spot. These lands also help mark the borders of a nation. In history, they were very important for trade. The Malay Peninsula helped trade between the east and the west. It sits where the Indian Ocean and China Seas meet.

There are many famous peninsulas to learn about. The Arabian Peninsula is the biggest at 3,100,000 square kilometers. The Indochinese Peninsula is second with 2,000,000 square kilometers. The Deccan Peninsula is also very large at 1,900,000 square kilometers. The Somali Peninsula in Africa covers 1,882,757 square kilometers. In North America, the Labrador Peninsula is 1,400,000 square kilometers. The Scandinavian Peninsula in Europe is 750,000 square kilometers. Each one has its own unique story.
