Geirangerfjord

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Geirangerfjord is a famous fjord in Norway. It sits in the Sunnmøre region of Møre og Romsdal county. This fjord is a branch of the Sunnylvsfjorden. That water flows into a larger area called the Storfjorden.

The small village of Geiranger sits at the very end. A river called the Geirangelva empties into the water there. This place is one of the most visited spots in Norway. It is a very special part of the natural world.

Many beautiful waterfalls flow down the steep cliffs. The Seven Sisters Falls is a very well-known sight. Across the water, you will find the Suitor waterfall. These two falls face each other in the fjord. People say the Suitor is trying to woo the sisters.

There is also a fall called the Bridal Veil. It falls delicately over a rocky edge. When the sun shines through it, it looks like a thin veil.

Long ago, people lived on small farms high up the mountains. These farms are now abandoned. Some are called Skageflå, Knivsflå, and Blomberg.

You can reach Skageflå by walking from Geiranger. The other farms need a boat trip to visit. The paths to these farms can be very dangerous. They wind around steep cliffs. Some even use bridges fixed with iron bolts and rings. An association called Storfjordens venner helps restore them.

In 2005, this fjord became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It shares this title with the Nærøyfjorden. This means the world sees it as a site of great value.

Some people wanted to build power lines across the water. This plan was a challenge to the site's status. Today, people travel by the Geiranger–Hellesylt Ferry. This boat runs between the towns of Geiranger and Hellesylt. By 2026, ships in the fjord must use zero-emissions engines.

Nature here is both beautiful and powerful. The mountains are some of the steepest on the west coast. They rise almost straight out of the water.

However, the mountain Åkerneset is a source of concern. It is slowly eroding into the fjord. A large rock slide could cause a megatsunami. This could hit Geiranger in about ten minutes. This idea was even used in the 2015 movie The Wave. The fjord also helped inspire the look of Arendelle in movies.
