A waterfall is a place where a river or stream flows over a steep drop. This drop can be a series of steps or a single vertical edge.

Most waterfalls are at least five feet high. One small example is Mill Pond Falls in Newington, Connecticut. Waterfalls are very important parts of our world. They can be beautiful places for people to visit. They also provide hydropower to make electricity.

Many waterfalls form through a way of working called the caprock model. A river first flows over a layer of hard, resistant bedrock. This hard rock stays in place while the water flows over it. Downstream, the river hits softer rock that wears away much faster.

As the water hits the bottom, it creates a deep area called a plunge pool. The force of the water can even drill deep holes into the bedrock. This process is called potholing. Over time, the waterfall may move backward and carve a deep canyon or gorge.

People have always been interested in these amazing sites. Explorers have traveled for a long time to see and name them. In 1493, Christopher Columbus saw Carbet Falls in Guadeloupe. Later, in the late 1600s, Louis Hennepin described Niagara Falls.

Many waterfalls have names that describe how they look. For example, David Livingstone named Victoria Falls after a queen. Some waterfalls are even found deep under the ocean. In the Denmark Strait, an underwater fall drops 2,000 feet down toward the ocean floor.

Waterfalls are also special homes for many living things. The falling water makes the air cool and damp. This creates a microclimate that helps mosses and liverworts grow well.

Some birds, like the black swift, like to build nests behind the falling water. This helps them stay safe from predators. Waterfalls can also make it hard for fish to travel up a river. This changes which animals can live in different parts of the water.

You might see a curtain fall, which is taller than it is wide. Some waterfalls are even ephemeral, meaning they only flow after rain or snowmelt.
