A cliff is a steep area of rock. It usually stands nearly vertical, which means it goes straight up.

You can find these rock faces in many places. They are common along coasts and near oceans. They also appear in mountain ranges and along river banks. Some cliffs form along an escarpment. An escarpment is a cliff made by moving earth or landslides.

Many cliffs are made of tough rock. This rock must resist being worn away. Common types include sandstone, limestone, chalk, and dolomite. Hard igneous rocks like granite and basalt also form cliffs.

Cliffs form through a way of working called weathering and erosion.

Weathering is when wind and water wear the rock down. Erosion is the way that rock is moved away. Gravity helps this happen by pulling pieces down. This often leaves a pile of broken rock at the bottom. This pile is called scree or talus. In dry areas, you might see a jumble of rocks. In wet areas, soil might cover the slope. Some cliffs even have waterfalls or rock shelters.

People have studied these formations for a long time. The word cliff comes from the Old English word "clif."

This word is related to words in Dutch and Old Norse. It may come from Latin words meaning a slope or hillside. Scientists use different rules to measure them. The British Ordnance Survey has its own way to tell them apart. They distinguish between cliffs and outcrops. This helps experts map the world more clearly.

There are many famous and huge cliffs on Earth.

The Great Trango in Pakistan has a face about 1,340 meters high. Mount Thor in Canada has a huge vertical drop of 1,250 meters. Some cliffs are even under the ocean. A ridge in the Kermadec Trench has an 8,000 meter drop. In Australia, Tasmania has sea cliffs made of dolerite. The north face of Mitre Peak in New Zealand drops 1,683 meters. These numbers show how massive these rocks can be.

Cliffs are part of the world you see every day.

You might see them while traveling near the sea. You can also find them in big mountain parks. Even in space, cliffs exist. Verona Rupes is a huge cliff on Miranda. Miranda is a moon of Uranus. This is the highest cliff in our solar system. Whether on Earth or in space, these rock walls are amazing.
