Most cliffs stand nearly straight up. You can find them near oceans or rivers. They also grow in big mountain ranges.

Cliffs form through weathering and erosion. Weathering is when wind and water wear rock down. Erosion is the way rock moves away. Gravity helps this happen by pulling rocks down. This often leaves a pile of broken rocks at the bottom. This pile is called scree or talus.

Many types of rock make cliffs. Sandstone, limestone, and chalk are common. Some cliffs are made of hard igneous rocks. These are rocks formed from cooled magma.

Some cliffs are very tall. The Great Trango towers in Pakistan are about 1,340 meters high.
