Rocks tell the story of our Earth. Sometimes, parts of that story are missing. This gap is called an unconformity.

An unconformity happens when there is a break in the rock record. This can happen if no new sediment is left behind. It can also happen if old rocks wear away. The time that is missing is called a hiatus.

Angular unconformity
Angular unconformity

One type is an angular unconformity. In this type, old rock layers are tilted. New layers sit flat on top of them. This creates a sharp angle between the layers.

Disconformity

Another type is a disconformity. These layers are both flat and parallel. They still show a gap in time. This gap might show old soil or channels.

Nonconformity

A nonconformity is different. It happens when sedimentary rock sits on top of other rock. The bottom rock might be igneous or metamorphic. These rocks do not have the same layers. James Hutton found famous examples in Scotland. He found them at Jedburgh and Siccar Point. These rocks help us study the history of our world.
