Tall rock pillars stand in the sea. These are called stacks.

They form near the coast. This happens through wave erosion. Erosion is when wind and water wear away rock.

First, the sea attacks weak spots in a cliff. These spots might be small cracks. The water uses hydraulic action to hit the rock. This is the force of water crashing against it. The cracks grow into caves.

A cave can wear all the way through a headland. This makes a rock arch. Then, gravity makes the arch collapse. This leaves a pillar of hard rock. This pillar is a stack.

Stacks often form in limestone cliffs. These rocks have a medium hardness. This means they resist wear at a medium rate. Some stacks even have a capstone. A capstone is a layer of hard rock on top.

Over time, the stack will also fall. It becomes a stump. A stump is a small rock island. High tides may cover it. Birds use stacks for nesting. People also go rock climbing there.
