Waves move sand and rocks in many ways. In the water, waves make a sandbar. A sandbar is a long ridge of sand. It sits under the water. Between the bar and the shore, there is a low area. This is called a runnel.

The beach has many parts too. Waves can throw sand and rocks high up. This makes a ridge called a berm. The berm stays on the beach. This happens because the water cannot wash it back out.

Storms can change the beach quickly. Big waves can wash sand away. This is called erosion. But normal waves can also build the beach up. Over time, new ridges can make the land grow. One place in Denmark is still growing today!
