A shoal is a natural ridge under the water.

It is made of sand or other loose bits. These bits can be silt, gravel, or even boulders. A shoal rises from the bottom near the surface. This makes the water very shallow.

Because the water is shallow, shoals can be dangerous for boats.

Shoals form in many ways. Moving water, like a river or ocean current, carries sand. When the water slows down, it drops the sand. This builds up a ridge. This is called deposition.

Waves also help make shoals. As waves move toward a beach, they slow down. They also get taller. This change is called shoaling. This can change the direction of the waves too.

Some shoals are very large. A tombolo is a special kind of bar. It forms a path between an island and the mainland.

Other shoals can block a river mouth. This can create a lagoon. A lagoon is a pool of water that is cut off from the sea.
