A reef is a ridge under the water.

Some reefs are made of rock. Other reefs are made by living things. These are called biotic reefs. Corals and algae, which are tiny plants, build them.

Corals and algae grow on top of each other. This makes a big, 3D frame. One huge reef is the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

Many sea animals use reefs for homes. They use them for food and safety. Reefs also act as a barrier for coasts. They block big waves and storms. This helps keep people and buildings safe.

Sometimes reefs turn white. This is called bleaching. It happens when the water gets too hot. High heat is the most common stressor. This stress makes the coral let out tiny algae. These algae give the coral power. Without them, the coral becomes weak and colorless.

If the water stays hot, the coral may die. Many reefs around the world have faced this lately. In 2023, bleaching was seen in 83 different countries.
