A shoal is a natural ridge found under the water.

These ridges are made of loose material like sand. They can also be made of silt, gravel, or even large boulders. A shoal rises from the bottom toward the surface. This makes the water very shallow in that spot. Because the water is shallow, shoals can be a danger to ships.

Sailors must be careful not to hit them.

Shoals form through a process called deposition. This happens when moving water carries sand or other bits.

When the water slows down, it can no longer carry the material. The sand then drops to the bottom. This builds up a long and narrow ridge. Ocean currents or rivers can cause this to happen. This process can also create a shoal complex if many ridges connect.

Waves also play a big part in how shoals work. As waves move into shallow water, they undergo a change called shoaling.

The waves slow down and grow taller. This can make waves break against the shore. Shoaling can even change the direction of the waves. This is called refraction, which is like light passing through a prism. Waves might slow down more at one end of a sloping bank.

There are many different types of these underwater features. A sandbar might be only a few meters long in a small stream. However, some can stretch for hundreds of kilometers along a coast.

One special type is a tombolo. A tombolo is a bar that forms a path between an island and the mainland. Another type is called a peresyp in Russian tradition. This is a sandbar that rises above the water to separate a lagoon from the sea.

These landforms connect to many parts of our world. Some shoals can block a river mouth and create a lagoon.

Over time, these lagoons might turn into salt marshes. Humans have lived near shoals since prehistoric times. People often use these areas to find food from the sea. In Alabama, a place called Muscle Shoals is named after these ridges. It was named for the many mussels found there.
