A river mouth is a very special place.

It is where a river meets a much larger body of water. This water might be a sea or an ocean. It could also be a lake or a gulf. This meeting point is important for the Earth. It changes how land and water work together.

Water moves in different ways at the mouth. The river carries sediment like sand or dirt. When the river slows down, it cannot carry this material. The river then drops the sediment in the new area. This can create landforms like deltas or sand bars. It can also make spits or tie channels.

How the water flows depends on its density. Density is how heavy the water is compared to other water. If river water is heavier, it sinks. This is called an underflow. It may move along the bottom of a lake. If the water is lighter, it stays on top. This is called an overflow. Most fresh river water is lighter than sea water.

People have lived near river mouths for a long time. These spots make great places for ports. They also make it easy to travel. Many cities in the United Kingdom use river names. Plymouth is at the mouth of the Plym River. Sidmouth is at the mouth of the Sid River. Great Yarmouth is at the mouth of the Yare River.

Some names come from the Celtic words Aber or Inver. These words mean mouth. You can see this in Aberdeen or Inverness. You can also see it in Inverkip or Inveraray. These places are often near the water. Today, rising sea levels are a big concern. Coastal cities face a higher risk of flooding. Damming rivers can also cause sediment starvation at the mouth.
