A grade tells us how steep a surface is.

We use this word for hills, roads, and tracks. It can also describe the tilt of a roof.

To find the grade, we look at two parts. First, we measure the rise. This is the vertical height. Next, we measure the run. This is the flat distance across. The grade is the ratio of rise over run.

There are many ways to write a grade. Many people use a percentage. For example, a 10% grade means the road rises 10 feet for every 100 feet of flat distance.

In Europe, people often use per mille. This uses a special symbol: ‰. This shows how many meters a track rises over a kilometer.

Steep grades can be hard for machines. A heavy train needs much more power to climb a 1% slope than a flat track. Some streets are very steep. Baldwin Street in New Zealand has a 34.8% grade. This makes it one of the steepest streets in the world.
