An Abney level is a tool used to measure slopes.

A slope is how steep a hill or a road is. Sir William de Wiveleslie Abney invented this tool. He was an English scientist. He lived from 1843 to 1920.

The tool has a tube for looking through. It also has a spirit level. A spirit level uses a small bubble to show if something is straight. Inside the tool, there is a mirror. This mirror lets you see the bubble while you look at a far target. You can hold it in your hand. You can also put it on a tall staff. This helps you get a very exact measure.

To use it, you look through the tube at a target. You move the level until the bubble sits on a cross-hair. Then, you read the slope from the scale. People use it in many ways. Foresters use it to find the height of trees. Miners use it to check the grade of roads. Geologists use it to study rocks and cliffs. It is small enough to fit in a coat pocket.
