It helps builders and surveyors find heights. They use it to see if things are on the same plane. A plane is a flat surface.

To use it, a person sets the tool on a tripod.

An assistant holds a tall staff. This staff has marks in inches or centimeters. The user looks through a telescope. They turn the telescope until the marks are in the crosshairs.

Some tools are automatic. They use a compensator to stay level. A compensator is a swinging prism. Gravity helps it work. This makes the tool much faster to use.

Long ago, people used a "Y" level. It was very big and slow. In 1832, William Gravatt made a new tool. He called it a dumpy level. It was shorter and easier to carry. It stays fixed to its parts. This makes it more accurate. Now, some levels even use lasers. They show the height on a digital screen.
