A level staff is a tool used to measure height.

It helps people find the difference in height between two points. Some rods are made of wood. Other rods are made of aluminum. Many rods have parts that slide inside each other. This lets the rod grow longer or shorter. This makes it easy to carry.

Most rods have marks on them. These marks use metric or imperial units. A metric rod uses meters. It may use patterns of squares or E shapes. These patterns are one centimeter high.

A person looks at these marks through a telescope. They can see very small details. They can read the rod down to a millimeter.

There are two main kinds of rods. Self-reading rods are easy to read through the telescope. Target rods have a special plate on them. This plate has bright colors. A person holds the target for the user. This helps them find the right spot. Digital levels can also read a bar-coded scale. This is a set of lines that a machine reads. It helps stop mistakes when writing down numbers.
