A level staff is a very important tool for measuring height.

It is also called a levelling rod. People use it with a special tool called a levelling instrument. This helps them find the difference in height between two different points. It can also show how high a point is above a vertical datum. This datum is a starting line for measuring height.

When someone uses the rod for stadiametric rangefinding, they call it a stadia rod.

There are a few ways these rods work. Many rods are made of aluminum or wood. Aluminum rods often have sections that telescope inside each other. This lets the user make the rod shorter for easy transport. Wooden rods might use sliding connections or hinged parts that fold.

Some rods have markings on just one side. Other rods have markings on both sides. One side might use metric units while the other uses imperial units. This makes the tool useful for many different jobs.

Reading the rod requires a careful eye.

On a metric rod, you might see large numbers for meters. Between these marks, there are patterns of squares or E shapes. Each of these shapes is exactly one centimeter high. A person looks through a telescope to see these marks. They can even see a tenth of a centimeter. This allows them to record a reading with millimeter precision. The imperial side uses feet and tenths of a foot.

There are different classes of rods for different tasks. Self-reading rods are clear enough to read through a telescope. Target rods are different because they have a special plate. This plate has quarters of bright colors like red and white. A rodman holds the target for the instrument user. They adjust it until it aligns with the telescope crosshairs.

Digital levels are also used today. These machines read a bar-coded scale on the staff. This helps stop mistakes and can even fix errors from the earth's shape.

Some workers use a special kind called a topographer's rod. This rod is used for topographical surveys. It has a zero mark right in the middle. The numbers increase in both directions away from that center point.

The rodman adjusts it so the zero point is level with the instrument. This shows if a spot is higher or lower than the viewer. Another type of topographer's rod has numbers that go up from the base. These tools help us understand the shape of the land around us.
