It helps people find a clear line of sight to a distant point. This helps them perform important tasks like making scale maps. A person can use it to measure angles or distances. They might measure horizontal or vertical angles. Some people use it to find the bearing of a forest fire. It is a very helpful device for many different jobs.

There are several ways an alidade works. Some early versions were just a bar or a rod. These had vanes, or small parts, on each end. Many vanes have a hole or a slit to look through. Some even have a thin wire to help you line things up. Other types do not have any holes at all. You must rotate the tool until the vanes hide the object. This is called eclipsing the object. This method can lead to very precise measurements.

Many people throughout history have used or made these tools. The word comes from an Arabic word. In Greek, it was called a dioptra. In Latin, it was known as a fiducial line. One famous person was Johannes Hevelius. He was an astronomer who wanted to catalog star positions. He did not use telescopes for his positional instruments. Instead, he used his own eyes and special alidades. He was very diligent in his work.

Different alidades are made from many materials. Some are made of wood or ivory. Others are made of brass. Hevelius used a design with a vertical cylinder. His vane had two narrow slits. The slits were the same distance apart as the cylinder's diameter. This helped him see a star on both sides of the cylinder. This helped him find the star's position with high accuracy.

Today, the name is used for complete instruments. A plane table alidade is one example. A sailor might use a telescopic alidade.

In a sextant, the alidade is a moving arm. It carries a mirror and an index. People in fire towers also use alidade tables. They use them to find smoke from a fire. They look through sights to find the exact direction.
