An astrolabe is a fascinating tool used to study the sky.

The name comes from Greek words that mean "star-taker." It acts like a portable star chart. It is also a physical model of the sky's half-dome.

This tool is much more than just a map. It is an analog calculation device. This means it can solve math problems without using electricity. It helps people understand the positions of stars and planets.

In its simplest form, it is a metal disc. The disc has a pattern of wires and cutouts. These parts allow a person to calculate where stars are located. One main job is measuring altitude. Altitude is how high a star or planet is above the horizon. The device can also help find local latitude. Latitude tells you how far north or south you are from the equator. By knowing the time, you can find your latitude. You can also do the opposite to find the time.

People have used astrolabes for a very long time. They were used in the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic Golden Age.

In the 10th century, an astronomer named al-Sufi wrote a huge book about them. His text had 386 chapters. He described more than 1,000 different ways to use the tool. These uses included navigation and keeping time. In the Islamic world, the tool was very important for religion. It helped people find the Qibla, which is the direction of Mecca. It also helped them find the correct times for daily prayers.

Many different kinds of astrolabes were made through history.

Some were spherical, which means they were shaped like a ball. In the 12th century, Sharaf al-Din al-Tusi made a linear astrolabe. This was a simple wooden rod with markings. In 1235, Abi Bakr of Isfahan invented a geared mechanical version.

Most people preferred metal versions made of brass. Metal did not warp like wood does. This made the measurements much more accurate. Sailors even used a simpler version called a balesilha. This helped them find their latitude on the ocean.

Astrolabes helped lead to many modern inventions. They were a precursor, or an early version, of the sextant.

They also influenced the very first mechanical astronomical clocks. These clocks worked like moving astrolabes. They showed the positions of the sun and planets in a continuous way. You can even see astrolabe-style displays in famous clocks today. Some people even make astrolabe watches now. It is amazing how an ancient tool still inspires us.
