An inclinometer is a very useful tool for measuring angles.

It can find the slope of a hill or a steep path. It also measures the elevation or depression of an object. This means it shows how high or low something is compared to gravity. People use many different names for it, like a tilt sensor or a slope gauge.

Some people even call it a clinometer or a gradient meter. These tools help us understand how things lean or tilt in our world.

There are many ways these tools work.

One older way uses a hollow disc that is half-filled with heavy liquid. A scale around the glass shows the angle where the liquid sits. When the liquid is on the zero line, the base is flat. Another way uses a sensor called an accelerometer. This sensor measures tilt by looking at the ground plane. Some advanced tools even use a gyroscope to help. A gyroscope helps separate real tilt from shakes or vibrations.

People have used versions of this tool for a very long time.

An ancient tool called an astrolabe worked like an inclinometer for stars. A Persian thinker named Al-Biruni once made a makeshift tool to find the sun's height. He used a counting board and a plumb line to find latitude. In the 1870s, a handheld tool called the Abney level was made. Later, in 1927, Charles Lindbergh used a Rieker inclinometer. It helped him know his climb and descent during his famous flight.

Today, inclinometers are used in many important jobs.

Forest workers use them to find how tall a tree is. Engineers use tiltmeters to see if big dams are staying stable. They are also used to check if a volcano is moving. In the ocean, they show if a ship is tilting in rough water. Even big guns use them to help aim shells over long distances. They can even measure the angle of the pelvis in a person's body.

You might even use an inclinometer while playing video games.

Some game controllers, like those for the Wii, have tilt sensors inside. This lets you move the controller to control the game. Games like Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble were built around this idea. You can also find these sensors in cameras and car safety systems. They help keep things level, like a solar panel facing the sun. It is amazing how one simple idea helps so many different things work.
