Altimeter

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An altimeter is a special tool. It measures the altitude of an object. Altitude is how high something is from a fixed level. This study of height is called altimetry. It is a lot like bathymetry. Bathymetry is the way we measure depth under water.

There are many ways these tools work. A pressure altimeter uses the air around it. Other types use different signals to find height. A radar altimeter sends out a radio signal. It waits for the signal to reflect from the surface. The tool measures the time it takes to return. This helps pilots know their height above the ground.

History shows how these tools changed. In 1931, experts tested a new kind. The US Army Air Corps and General Electric worked together. They tested a sonic altimeter for aircraft. This tool used high-pitched sounds. It worked like the sounds made by a bat. It was very helpful in heavy fog or rain.

Many different technologies exist today. A Lidar altimeter uses light to navigate. The Ingenuity helicopter used this on Mars. Some satellites also measure height. The Jason-1 and Jason-2 missions use altimeters. They measure the height of the sea surface. GPS can also find altitude using four or more satellites.

These tools keep people safe. Radar altimeters are part of warning systems. They tell pilots if they are flying too low. They also warn if the terrain is rising ahead. Some combat aircraft use them to follow the ground. This allows them to fly at a very low height. Using the right tool is a very important job.
