One kind uses air pressure. Other kinds use signals. In 1931, experts tested a sonic altimeter. This tool uses high sounds. It works like a bat. The sound hits the ground. Then the sound comes back. The tool turns this into feet.

A radar altimeter uses radio signals. It measures how long a signal takes to bounce back. This helps pilots land planes safely. It also warns pilots if the ground is rising.

Some tools use light. A Lidar altimeter uses light to help a helicopter on Mars. This helicopter is named Ingenuity.

Satellites can also help. They use GPS to find height. This is done by using four or more satellites. Some satellites measure the height of the sea. These missions are named Jason-1 and Jason-2.
