geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Elevation tells us how high a place is. It measures the height of a spot on Earth. Most people measure it from sea level.

This is a fixed point we use as a start.

Some words sound the same but mean different things. We use the word altitude for things in the air. This includes planes or spacecraft. We use the word depth for things under the ground or water.

Elevation is mostly for the land we walk on.

Elevation is not the same as distance from the Earth's center. The Earth is not a perfect circle. It bulges at the middle. Because of this, Mount Everest has the highest elevation. But the peak of Chimborazo is further from the Earth's center.

We use special maps to see these heights. A topographic map uses lines to show hills and valleys.

Computers also help us. They use digital models to show the shape of the land. These tools help us study the world.
