Pilots use different ways to find their altitude. Some measure from the sea. Others measure from the ground below. One tool is a pressure altimeter. This tool uses air pressure to show height.

High places have less air pressure. This happens because gravity pulls air toward the ground. At high altitudes, there is also less oxygen. This can make people feel sick. We call this altitude sickness.

Your body can learn to live in high places. This is called acclimatization. It can take days or even weeks. Your heart might beat faster to help. Your breathing might get faster too.

Athletes also use high places for training. It can help them run longer races. But it can make short sprints easier. This is because there is less air resistance. There is less air pushing against them as they move.
