Have you ever noticed how things shift when you move?

This shift is called parallax. It is a change in how an object looks from different spots.

Nearby objects show a big shift. Far objects show a much smaller shift. This helps you see depth.

Your eyes help you do this. Humans have two eyes in different spots. They see two slightly different views at once. Your brain uses these views to find distance. This is called stereopsis. Some animals use it too. Pigeons bob their heads to see depth.

Scientists use parallax to measure the sky. They look at a star from two sides of the Sun. This creates a giant triangle. By measuring the angles, they can find the distance to the star. This is a key step in the cosmic distance ladder. This is a set of ways to measure space.

Parallax can also cause errors. Look at a car's speedometer. From the passenger seat, the needle may look wrong. This happens because of the angle of your eyes.
