Magnification

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Magnification makes things look bigger. It does not change the real size. It only changes how large an object appears to your eye.

We measure this using a ratio called optical magnification. This is a number that shows the size of the image compared to the true size.

Many tools use lenses to help us see. A magnifying glass uses a convex lens. This is a lens that curves outward. It lets you hold a small object closer to your eye.

A microscope makes tiny things look like much larger images. This helps you see them from a comfortable distance. A telescope works differently. It uses a large lens or mirror to make distant objects look closer and larger.

There is a limit to how much we can zoom in. If you magnify too much, you will not see more detail. This is called empty magnification. For a good telescope, the limit depends on how wide the lens is. In a microscope, you can see more detail if you use oil. This is called oil immersion.
