A lens is a clear tool that bends light. This bending is called refraction. Lenses can be made of glass or plastic.

There are different types of lenses. A biconvex lens bulges out on both sides. It is a converging lens. This means it brings light together to a single spot.

A biconcave lens curves inward on both sides. This is a diverging lens. It spreads light beams out.

Some lenses have one flat side. These are called plano-convex or plano-concave lenses. Other lenses are shaped like a crescent moon. We call these meniscus lenses.

Lenses help us see the world in new ways. People use them in eyeglasses to help vision. They are also used in cameras and telescopes.

Scientists use them to look at far-off stars. Lenses can even be used in lighthouses to guide ships. The name lens comes from a Latin word for a lentil seed. This is because some lenses have that same shape.
