Benjamin Franklin is often called the inventor. He wanted to read the lips of people. This helped him understand them better. He may have cut his lenses in half to do this. Some people think others made them first. But Franklin made them very popular.

Early bifocals used two separate lens halves. They were put into one frame. This made the glasses very fragile. Later, makers found a way to fuse them together. In 1915, a man named Henri Courmettes made a "Flat Top" lens. This gave people a wide area for reading.

Today, makers mold the reading part into the main lens. These parts can be many shapes. Some people may feel dizzy or have headaches from them. This is because the field of view is small.

Even animals use something like this. A diving beetle has two ways to see. This helps it catch its food easily.
