Lenses help us see by bending light. This ability is called optical power. It shows how much a lens bends light.

High power means a short focal length. Focal length is the distance light travels to focus.

We measure this power in dioptres. A dioptre is the unit for optical power.

Lenses can act in two ways. Some lenses bring light together. These have a positive power. Other lenses spread light out. These have a negative power. If you put two lenses close together, their powers add up. This helps people make tools to see better.

Your eyes use lenses to focus light. Sometimes the eye has a refractive error. This means it cannot focus light on the retina. The retina is the part of the eye that sees. A myopic eye has too much power. The light focuses in front of the retina. A hyperopic eye has too little power. The light focuses behind the retina. One eye might also have a different power than the other. This is called anisometropia.
