Optical path

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Light moves along a specific track. We call this the optical path. It is the way a light ray travels through a space.

One way to measure this is the geometrical path length. This is the actual distance between two points. It is like a straight line on a map. However, light can change its path. It can bend when it hits something. This is called refraction.

Light can also hit a mirror. This makes the light turn around. We call this reflection. Some light might even get soaked up by a material. This is called absorption.

Materials change how light moves. For example, glass lets light pass through. We call these transparent materials. Some things are translucent. This means they let some light through, like frosted glass. Other things are opaque. This means they block the light.

Scientists use tools to guide light. They use lenses and prisms. They also use mirrors. These tools help us see how light travels. It is a very useful way to study the world.
