Optical path

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Light travels along a specific track. We call this track the optical path. It is the way a light ray moves through a space. This path is very important in science. It helps us understand how light behaves. Scientists study these paths to see how light moves.

One way to measure this is the geometrical path length. This is the distance between two points. You can think of it as a straight line. It is also called the GPD. The optical path length can change in different materials. In a single medium, you multiply the GPD by the refractive index. This number tells us how much the material affects light.

Many things can change the way light moves. One way is through reflection. This happens when light hits a surface and turns around. Another way is through refraction. This is when light bends as it moves. Light can also experience total internal reflection. Sometimes, a material will soak up the light. This is called absorption.

Different materials affect the light in different ways. Some materials are transparent. This means light can pass through them easily. Examples include things like optical filters. Other materials are translucent. This means they let some light through. Frosted glass is a good example of this. Some materials are opaque. This means they block the light entirely.

We use many tools to guide light along a path. Lenses are very common tools. Prisms are also used to change light. Mirrors help light reflect in new directions. Some tools use folded optics to work. This can make the mechanical length of a device smaller than the GPD. These tools help us study physical optics. They also help us study geometrical optics.
