Optical power

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Optical power tells us how much a lens bends light. It is also called dioptric power or focusing power. This power shows if light converges or diverges. Converging means light comes together at a point. Diverging means light spreads out apart.

This concept is very important for many tools. It helps us understand how mirrors and lenses work. We use it to make things like glasses.

There is a special way to calculate this power. It is the reciprocal of the focal length. Focal length is how far light travels to focus. High optical power means a short focal length.

We use a unit called the dioptre. The symbol for a dioptre is D or dpt. The SI unit is the inverse metre.

A lens can have positive or negative power. Converging lenses have a positive optical power. Diverging lenses have a negative power.

Scientists use math to combine different lenses. If two thin lenses are close, their powers add up. The total power is roughly the sum of each lens.

You can also add the power of each surface. This math helps people who work in optometry. They use these rules to help people see. The power changes if a lens is in a new medium. A refractive medium is a material like water.

Our eyes use optical power to see clearly. A refractive error happens when the focus is wrong. This error means light does not hit the retina. The retina is the part of the eye that sees.

A myopic eye has too much power. In this case, light focuses in front of the retina. This is known as a minus power. A hyperopic eye has too little power. Then, light focuses behind the retina.

There are other ways the eye can focus differently. Astigmatism happens when power is different in different directions. This is also called a cylindrical power.

Another condition is called anisometropia. This is when one eye has a different power than the other. These facts help us understand how vision works. Knowing these terms helps us talk about eye health. It shows how light and our eyes work together.
