Refractive error

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

To see clearly, your eye must focus light. Light lands on a part in the back of your eye. We call this part the retina.

This focusing is called refraction. It happens when light bends through the cornea and the lens.

Sometimes, light does not land on the retina correctly. This is called a refractive error. There are a few common types. Myopia is nearsightedness. This happens if your eyeball is too long. Far away things look blurry. Hyperopia is farsightedness. This happens if your eyeball is too short. Close things look blurry.

Another type is astigmatism. This happens when the cornea is the wrong shape. Objects may look stretched out. As people get older, they may get presbyopia. This is when the lens cannot change shape well. It makes close work hard.

Many people have these errors. About one to two billion people in the world do. You can fix your vision with glasses or contact lenses. Some people use surgery to change the shape of their eye.
