Presbyopia

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

As people get older, their eyes change.

Presbyopia
Presbyopia

This change is called presbyopia. It makes it hard to see things that are close up. Many adults over age 40 will notice this. It can make reading small print very difficult. You might find yourself holding a book far away. This is sometimes called "short arms."

This happens because of changes inside the eye. The eye has a part called a lens. This lens helps you focus on objects. To see close up, the lens must bend. As you age, the lens gets harder. It loses its flexibility. The muscles that move the lens also get weaker. Because the lens cannot bend well, light does not land correctly on the retina. The retina is the part of the eye that sees images.

Eye doctors can help you. They use a tool called a phoropter to test your vision.

You can use many things to help you see. Some people wear reading glasses or bifocals. Others use contact lenses. There are also eye drops and surgery to help.
