The lens stays focused for distance instead of near objects. This causes light to focus behind the retina instead of on it.
Presbyopia can be categorized into three distinct stages. These stages are based on the amount of correction needed. Mild presbyopia is usually seen in people aged 40 to 45. These individuals need +0.75 to +1.25 diopters of correction for near vision. Moderate presbyopia typically affects people aged 46 to 55. They require an increase of +1.5 to +2.25 diopters. Advanced presbyopia is common in people over age 55. These patients need a correction of +2.5 diopters or greater. 
Doctors use several methods to diagnose this condition. A common tool is the phoropter. This device measures refraction to determine the necessary correction. 
There are many ways to treat the symptoms of presbyopia. The most common method is using glasses with a convex lens. 
Newer treatments include eye drops and surgery. Pilocarpine is an FDA-approved eye drop. It works by binding to muscarinic receptors in the eye. This causes the pupillary sphincter muscle to contract. This constriction of the pupil increases the depth of focus. The effects usually last between 6 and 10 hours. Presbyopia is a massive global health factor. It is estimated that 1.8 billion people have this condition. This represents about 25% of the global population. Presbyopia is specifically tied to the aging of the lens and muscles. It can also be influenced by other health factors.
